First Goebel TM

The photo is of markings underneath the figurine. Listed are two trademark charts. One chart on left says the first TM was used between 1934 and 1942. In the chart below, it says that the first TM (trademark) was used between 1935 and 1949.save

  1. Thank you for posting this to my antique forum board, I have answered your question on there and thought I would post the same response on your blog.

According to the book "Goebel Collector's Guide By Werner Moderhack, Ray Wagner" The crown mark identified as being in use from 1934-1942 is known as the "wide crown", the book actually identifies this mark as being used in 1923, a narrow more stylized crown was used from 1914-1920 this was known as the Ducal Crown. The double crown marks are fairly common and were seen through about 1945 (the book does not give an exact date but my deduction from when new marks were introduced led me to this date.) There were several variations in the crown mark including the dot shown on your piece.

There was also an overlap with the crown and the bee marks.

The crown mark appeared again for a short time in 1969 and in 1972 on limited products, this was done so that they retained their rights to the crown mark.

After WWII from 1946-1948, the U.S. Occupational Forces demanded that Goebel and all pieces made in the U.S. controlled zone of Germany be marked with "Made in U.S. Zone."

Early crown pieces (including double crown) are marked with "Germany", later are marked "West Germany" and later yet are "Western Germany."

The X.S. 20 is a mold number, "B" means that it is one of two... there should be an "A". Looking at the flattened backside I would say that a boy and girl sat back to back. The number 3 has no meaning other than a factory mark identifier. If a year is identified, according to the book it is the date the original or "mother mold" was made and it will be clearly identifiable as a date.

I hope that this helps to narrow down a date or date range for you.

  2. Thank you Michelle for all this info; this certainly narrows it down for me.
I have yet to find more information on exactly this piece but will keep trying.
I've added your link to my blog, thanks again!
